John Lyons is revered as this country’s equestrian patriarch, elevating the western discipline to unprecedented levels of popularity. Although known as the ultimate western rider and teacher, John embraces all equestrian riding disciplines. John’s extraordinary ability to inspire and teach people how to become partners with their horses has launched a global training career that has spanned more than 25 years. After a successful show career and gaining practical horse knowledge on his Colorado cattle ranch, John began giving training clinics and symposiums in 1980. With a background in education, he recognized people were eager for help with their horses, and developed an extremely successful, solid training program that is unsurpassed.
As a pioneer in the clinician movement, John has been instrumental in changing the horse industry, forever. Many of today’s training principles found their roots in John’s common-sense approach to people and horses. His philosophy on the snaffle bit influenced positive changes in the horse show circuit. His teaching methods have continually evolved over the years as a result of working with his best teachers – thousands of horses.

John commitment to helping people through education has resulted in co-authoring more than 20 books, as well as producing more than 30 video/DVD tapes and more than 10 audiotapes.
John has developed a Certification Program that has produced more than 200 professional “John & Josh Lyons Certified” trainers.
John’s horse and “partner” of 27 years, Bright Zip, is in the Hall of Fame in the Appaloosa Association. In 1994, Zip was honored as the Breyerfest Horse of the Year.
John has helped train Mounted Patrol Units all over the nation.
John is recognized as ‘America’s Most Trusted Horseman’ and is a major clinician and keynote speaker at large horse events nationwide and abroad.
Equine Affaire chose John as the recipient of their first and only Exceptional Equestrian Educator Award.

John was chosen as the winner of the University of Louisville’s John W. Galbreath Award for his outstanding contributions to the horse industry.
