is perhaps best known for his Olympic accomplishments – bringing home the first Eventing gold medal for the United States in more than a quarter of a century at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. He also helped the US Eventing team capture the Team bronze medal.
Most recently, he has won several top international Eventing competitions such as the 2004 Foxhall CCI***, the 2003 Jersey Fresh CCI**, the 2002 Fair Hill CCI***, and the 2002 Team Gold at the World Equestrian Games in Jerez, Spain.
In 2001, he brought home his third victory at the Rolex CCI****, and he won the United States Equestrian Team (USET) Fall Eventing Championship. In 1997, he became only the second American in history to win the coveted Badminton CCI**** in England. He has been named Rider of the Year by USA Equestrian and he currently serves as President of the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF), having been instrumental in its creation. In 2003, David was awarded the prestigious Wofford Cup, which is given by the U.S. Eventing Association to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the sport of Eventing in a non-riding capacity. David was the first rider ever to receive this award.
won the Team bronze medal at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000, and has since won the 2001 and 2003 Fair Hill International CCI***, as well as the Individual Silver Medal at the 2003 Pan American Games, also held at Fair Hill. The year 2003 also brought her two top ten finishes at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event.
Karen began competing internationally in 1979, when she was just 21 years old, finishing tenth at the prestigious Badminton CCI****, in England. In 1984, riding The Optimist, she became the first American to win the Boekelo CCI*** in Holland, and she won the Chesterland CCI*** the following year on the famous horse Castlewellan, in their first three-day event together. She was a member of the 1988 USET Olympic squad and in 1991 Karen won the famous Rolex event for the first time, a feat she would repeat in 1997, and again in 1999. She placed first and third in the 1993 Punchestown CCI***, she was ranked third in the world that year and was the number one ranked lady rider.
Based on her remarkable national and international performances, Karen has earned the U.S. Eventing Association’s Female Equestrian Athlete of the Year a record ten times since 1989. She was awarded Equestrian of the Year for 2007, helped along by the 12-year-old Thoroughbred/Arabian/Shetland cross and new star of the eventing world, Theodore O'Connor.
